The patty melt is a grilled beef patty
served on bread with cheese and onions.
Usually the rye bread is buttered and grilled.
Some people like to add a slice of cooked bacon.
Ingredients:
For each sandwich:
1 ground beef burger
2 thick slices of Swiss cheese
2 slices of rye bread
Sliced sweet onion
Butter
Directions:
Cook onion slices in butter until caramelized,
about 20-30 minutes over medium low heat.
While onion is cooking, fry or grill
hamburger patty to desired degree of doneness.
A few minutes before the meat and onions are done,
butter one side of each slice of rye bread.
Place buttered side down on hot frying pan
and top each with one slice Swiss cheese.
When the bread is toasted to a golden brown
and the cheese is melted, top one slice
with the beef patty and onions
and the other slice of bread.
