Remember those salty sweet ground beef
Sloppy Joe made with canned Manwich sandwiches?
As a child they were really tasty good,
but not so much tasty good as an adult.
Here is my recipe for a better homemade version
of sloppy joe's without all the salt and sugar.
Ingredients:
1 pound ground beef, 80/20
1 yellow onion, peeled and chopped
1 red onion, peeled and chopped
1-1/2 cups celery, peeled and chopped
2 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
2 teaspoons salt or to taste
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon sweet smoked paprika
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
2 tablespoons chili powder
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 (28 ounce) bottle ketchup
1/4 cup dark brown sugar
1/4 cup water
Directions:
Cook the ground beef, onion, and celery in a large skillet
over high until the meat is fully cooked; drain off the fat.
Mix in the garlic, salt, pepper, cumin, paprika, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, and water.
Reduce the heat to low and simmer uncovered for 40 minutes.
Place in a covered container and refrigerate over night.
Re-heat as much as you need in microwave.
Serve on buttered and toasted hamburger buns.
Along with a glass of your favorite wine.
